Why 2SLGBTQIA+ Health Is Important

Eliminating 2SLGBTQIA+ health disparities and enhancing efforts to improve 2SLGBTQIA+ health is necessary to ensure that 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals can lead long, healthy lives.  We invite you to join us in learning from these resources. If you have any suggestions for additional resources, or any feedback on this subject guide, please let us know by sending an email to Library@HorizonNB.ca

What Does 2SLGBTQIA+ Mean?

2SLGBTQIA+ is an acronym for:

2S
2/Two-Spirit
L
Lesbian
G
Gay
B
Bisexual
T
Transgender or
Transsexual
Q
Queer or
Questioning
I
Intersex
A
Ally or
 Asexual

People often use 2SLGBTQIA+ to mean all of the communities included in the “LGBTTTQQIAA”.  The  stands for other ways individuals express their gender and sexuality outside heteronormativity and the gender binary.

+ Pansexual
+ Agender
+ Gender Queer
+ Bigender
+ Gender Variant
+ Pangender

Acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer. The Q generally stands for queer when LGBTQ organizations, leaders, and media use the acronym. In settings offering support for youth, it can also stand for questioning. LGBT and LGBTQ+ are also used, with the + added in recognition of all non-straight, non-cisgender identities. (See Transgender Glossary ) Both are acceptable, as are other versions of this acronym. The term “gay community” should be avoided, as it does not accurately reflect the diversity of the community. Rather, LGBTQ community or LGBTQ+ community are recommended.

Pronoun Usage

He/Him A person who identifies as male
She/Her A person who identifies as female
They/Them   A gender-neutral pronoun. Typically used by people who are non-binary; they are not exclusively male or female
Ze/Zir A neopronoun which is also a gender-neutral pronoun. Typically used by people who are non-binary; they do not feel that they are male or female or do not feel they should be labeled as such
[Name] Some people do not use pronouns at all, in this case you refer to them by their name alone
