1. How do I find Topics & Articles

  • Request a literature search using the online request or by contacting Library Services
  • Searching databases such as those located under Popular Resources
  • Journal email alerts - Contact Library Services for more information
  • Topic Alerts Apps/Websites
  • Full-Text + Document Delivery

2. Search Tips & Tricks

PubMed

  • Clinical queries > Keyword searching using Pubmed's
re-set filters to find quick results related to specific study categories
  • Limits > Good ones to use are Language and Date, be
cautious about applying other filters in case abstracts
haven't been indexed, you might miss something relevant
  • Keyword vs MESH  > Keyword searches will capture
any recent abstracts that have not been indexed in
MeSh yet; check your SearchDetails box to see how
your keywords are being translated and mapped, some terms will map to MeSh displaying results indexed that way

Trip Database

  • Displays results using evidence pyramid ranking
  • Results often are not relevant beyond the first couple in the list, try using the evidence categories on the side for more specific results
  • Keyword search only > Hard to tell how TRIP is bringing back results

3. Roles and Responsibilities

Facilitator and Participants' Roles

  • Facilitator - run the session, prepare questions, interesting points to keep participants engaged
  • Participants - role to come to session prepared,  should be willing to participate and be engaged
  • It is up to the facilitator to decide how formal or casual they would like the session to be. They can assign an administrator to record meeting notes, keep track of questions/answers, etc.

Resources

4. Distribute to Your Group

Generally, it is permissible to make a single copy of a journal article for individual or research purposes, however making multiple copies for team or teaching purposes is not allowed without permission. It is better to send a link to the document.

5.  How do I Critique Journal Articles?

Evidence-based Practice Books (All titles available through Library Services)

Evidence-based Practice and Critical Appraisal Worksheets

6. Discussion Questions

Sample Questions

  • How is this information applicable to your practice?
  • What was the most interesting part of the article?
  • Did anything surprise you?

Tips

  • Facilitators should be conscious of the length
    of the article they select
  • Participants should bring their own questions
and comments about the article to get the
    discussion started
  • Facilitators should prepare extra questions to
    keep the conversation active
